In September 1977, twenty-six students and five faculty members gathered in a borrowed parish facility in Triangle, Virginia, to begin a new Catholic college with no campus, no endowment, and a mission statement borrowed from Pope St. Pius X: to restore all things in Christ. Nearly fifty years later, that college has produced 108 priests, graduated its largest class ever, and built a Gothic chapel whose cornerstone was blessed by Pope Benedict XVI.
What happens when a convert historian decides that the best way to form faithful Catholic leaders is to build a college from the ground up, with the faith at the center of every subject?
Meet Christendom College
Christendom College is a four-year Catholic liberal arts college in Front Royal, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley about seventy miles west of Washington, DC. Since its founding in 1977, the college has formed thousands of graduates for careers in the priesthood, religious life, law, medicine, education, business, and family life, all through a curriculum built on the conviction that faith and reason belong together.
The campus overlooks the Shenandoah River with views of the Appalachian Mountains, and its centerpiece is the Christ the King Chapel, dedicated in April 2023. The college is listed in the Discover Catholic Business directory as one of the featured institutions in the Catholic education category.
How Christendom College Was Founded
The founder, Dr. Warren H. Carroll, was a historian who converted to Catholicism in 1968 after years as a deist. He joined the staff of Triumph, an orthodox Catholic magazine founded by L. Brent Bozell Jr., and became involved in its summer educational programs. When the magazine and its programs came to an end, Carroll was determined that the vision behind them should continue.
His answer was to start a college. In September 1977, Christendom opened with just 26 students and 5 faculty in Triangle, Virginia. Two years later, the college purchased a former AFL-CIO property in Front Royal for $275,000, establishing the permanent campus it occupies today.
Carroll's vision was straightforward: form men and women who understand the Catholic intellectual tradition deeply enough to contribute to the renewal of culture, whatever field they enter. That vision has not changed in nearly five decades.
What Makes the Christendom Curriculum Different
Christendom's academic identity rests on a demanding 77-credit-hour core curriculum that every student completes regardless of major. There is no way to graduate without a serious grounding in the foundations of Western and Catholic thought.
| Core Area | What Students Study | |-----------|---------------------| | Philosophy | 18 credit hours in the perennial philosophy, from the Greeks through St. Thomas Aquinas | | Theology | 18 credit hours in sacred doctrine | | History | The full sweep of Western civilization | | Literature | Great books from Homer to the modern era | | Political theory | The foundations of ordered liberty | | Latin | Reading the Church's patrimony in the original language |
The result is a graduate who can think critically, write clearly, and articulate the faith with both precision and charity. Employers, graduate schools, and seminaries have noticed. About 18 percent of alumni have gone on to earn graduate degrees from institutions including Notre Dame Law School, Harvard, the University of Virginia, Oxford, the Angelicum in Rome, and the Catholic University of America.
Christendom has also made a distinctive financial choice: it accepts no federal funding, including federal student loans. By declining federal aid, the college preserves complete independence in how it teaches and governs itself, and it funds financial aid through its own scholarships and donors instead.

Christ the King Chapel
In 2008, the cornerstone for a new chapel was carried to Vatican City, where Pope Benedict XVI blessed it and reviewed the building plans. His reported response was simple: "It is beautiful."
The finished Christ the King Chapel was dedicated on April 15, 2023. It is a Gothic church built to lift hearts and minds toward God, and its details reflect that ambition:
- A 2,850-pipe organ designed and installed by Kegg Pipe Organ Builders
- 12 bells from McShane Bell Company housed in twin towers
- Stained-glass windows from Beyer Studio
- A restored high altar and four side shrines by Rugo Stone
- Interior artwork created by Christendom alumni artisans
Gothic architecture was chosen deliberately to reflect the name Christendom and to make the chapel itself a form of catechesis. Daily Mass, Eucharistic adoration, and the sacraments are at the center of student life, and the chapel gives that life a fitting home.
Why Christendom College Matters
The measure of a Catholic college is its graduates, and by that measure Christendom stands out.
108 alumni priests have been ordained from the college, including four in the summer of 2024 alone. Many more alumni have entered religious life as sisters and brothers. Graduates teach at universities including the University of Dallas and Providence College, practice law and medicine, lead Catholic media and nonprofit organizations, and raise faithful families.
The college is also growing. Its largest graduating class ever, 132 students, crossed the stage in May 2025. In February 2026, alumna Joan Watson of the class of 2006 published Making a Pilgrimage: A Companion for Catholics, one recent example of how graduates keep contributing to Catholic culture long after commencement.
What Christendom demonstrates is that a small college with a clear identity, a rigorous curriculum, and financial independence can thrive. Its model has encouraged a generation of faithful Catholic institutions and homeschool communities that came after it, and it remains a benchmark for what integrated Catholic education can look like.
Catholic Education in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley
Front Royal has become an unusual concentration of Catholic institutions for a town of its size. Alongside Christendom College, the area is home to Human Life International, a number of Catholic homeschool families drawn by the college community, and several parishes serving the growing Catholic population of the northern Shenandoah Valley. The Diocese of Arlington, which covers the region, is one of the fastest-growing dioceses in the eastern United States.
