What happens when a mom helps her young sons start a lawn care business—and decades later, it grows into a full-service outdoor company serving four Michigan counties?
Meet Christian Brothers Lawncare & Outdoor Services—the Fremont, Michigan-based outdoor services company that proves Catholic entrepreneurship can start at any age. Founded by brothers Jay and James when they were just 10 and 12 years old with their mother's help in Birmingham, Michigan, Christian Brothers has grown into a full-service landscaping and property maintenance company serving families and businesses across West Michigan.
Today, Jay continues the family legacy from Fremont, building a business that's about more than just mowing lawns—it's about personal relationships, problem-solving, and the kind of attention to detail that comes from treating every property like it belongs to family.
A Family Business from the Start
The story of Christian Brothers is the story of a Catholic family teaching their children the value of work.
When Jay and James were young boys in Birmingham, Michigan, their mother helped them launch their first business venture: a lawn care service. They learned to show up on time, do quality work, treat customers with respect, and earn their pay honestly.
It was more than a summer job. It was formation in the virtues that make a business successful—and a life meaningful.
Years later, when Jay moved to Fremont in Michigan's Newaygo County, he decided to revive the family business. What started small has grown into a company serving customers across Kent, Muskegon, Newaygo, and Ottawa Counties—some of the most beautiful regions in West Michigan.
Services That Keep Properties Beautiful Year-Round
Christian Brothers offers comprehensive outdoor services for residential and commercial customers:
Lawn Care Services Professional mowing, trimming, and lawn maintenance that keeps yards looking their best throughout the growing season.
Fall and Spring Clean-Up Seasonal services including leaf removal, debris clearing, and property preparation for the coming months.
Mulch and Flower Bed Preparation Creating and maintaining beautiful landscaping beds that enhance curb appeal and property value.
Gutter Cleaning Keeping gutters clear and functional to protect homes from water damage.
Snow Removal Reliable winter services to keep driveways, walkways, and commercial properties safe and accessible.
This year-round approach means customers can rely on one trusted company for all their outdoor property needs—building relationships that last through every season.
Built on Relationships, Not Just Transactions
What sets Christian Brothers apart is their philosophy of personal connection.
From their website: "Our team is passionate about building strong relationships with our customers that are based on personal connections, flexible service, and attention to detail."
In an industry where many companies treat customers as numbers, Christian Brothers takes the opposite approach. They want to know their clients "on a deeper level than other landscaping companies."
This isn't just marketing language. It's the natural result of a business built on family values:
- Personal connections because customers are neighbors, not account numbers
- Flexible service because life is complicated and good businesses adapt
- Attention to detail because work worth doing is worth doing well
- Team approach because excellent results require collaboration
Serving West Michigan Communities
Christian Brothers primarily serves customers in four Michigan counties:
- Kent County — Including Grand Rapids, the state's second-largest city
- Muskegon County — Lake Michigan communities with unique landscaping needs
- Newaygo County — Where the company is headquartered in Fremont
- Ottawa County — Coastal communities along the western shore
This regional focus allows Christian Brothers to truly know their service area—understanding local conditions, building community relationships, and being available when customers need them.
Why This Matters
Christian Brothers started the way the best family businesses do: a mom teaching her boys the value of honest work. Jay and James were 10 and 12 when they first pushed a mower for a neighbor in Birmingham, Michigan. Decades later, Jay revived that childhood venture into a year-round outdoor services company covering four West Michigan counties. What makes this business worth highlighting is not just the quality of the lawn care — it is the origin story. Christian Brothers is living proof that Catholic families who teach their children to work hard, show up on time, and treat customers like neighbors can build enterprises that last.
