From Ranger to Scribe: How One Catholic Father is Reviving Medieval Manuscript Art
What happens when a battle-hardened Army Ranger trades his rifle for a quill and dedicates his life to illuminating the Gospels?
Meet Joel Trumbo of Tamburn Bindery—a former U.S. Army Ranger, Catholic convert, husband, and father of nine who is doing something almost no one else in the world is doing: creating hand-illuminated manuscripts using the same techniques the monks used over a thousand years ago.
From his homestead nestled in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, Joel crafts stunning works that would look at home in a medieval scriptorium. His premium books are hand-sewn onto leather bands, joined to wood covers, and wrapped in goatskin—just as they were made centuries ago.
But this isn't just a hobby. It's a mission.
A Warrior's Path to Beauty
Joel served 11 years in the military, including five years as a U.S. Army Ranger with four combat deployments to Afghanistan. He became Catholic in 2005, and somewhere between the battlefield and the baptismal font, he discovered a calling that seemed improbable for a soldier: the ancient art of manuscript illumination.
Today, alongside his wife and their nine children, Joel runs Tamburn Manor—a homestead and arts & crafts enterprise inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of William Morris. Their vision? To cultivate an environment of creativity, classical education, and traditional handcraft trades.
Eventually, they hope to establish an on-site classical school for young men in the Appalachians—a place where students can study the classics and learn traditional trades in the beautiful setting of the Shenandoah Valley.
The Work: Manuscripts Worthy of Cathedrals
Joel's masterworks include:
The Illuminated Beowulf — A breathtaking 342-page hardcover featuring 10 full-page illuminations and over 40 illuminated chapter initials, all in the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon style of the Book of Kells. The book presents both Old and Modern English together, bound in faux leather with gold foiling, gold-edged pages, and a ribbon bookmark.
The Tamburn Illuminated Gospels — Created in the Irish/Anglo-Saxon tradition of the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels, this is Joel's attempt to create something worthy of the Word of God—a Gospel book that inspires awe and devotion.
Celtic Gospel Coloring Books — Digital and print versions featuring Joel's illumination work, allowing others to participate in this ancient tradition through their own artistic practice.
Handmade Journals & Prayer Cards — Leatherbound journals, historical reproductions, and Catholic devotional items available through his Etsy shop.

Why This Matters
In an age of screens and scrolling, Joel Trumbo is doing something countercultural and deeply Catholic: he's creating objects of permanent beauty that draw the soul toward God.
Every illuminated capital letter, every Celtic knotwork border, every gold-leafed page is a prayer made visible. This is the same tradition that gave us the Book of Kells, created by monks who understood that the Gospels deserved our finest craftsmanship.
When you support Tamburn Bindery, you're not just buying a book. You're supporting a Catholic family of eleven. You're preserving an ancient art form. You're investing in a vision of education and craftsmanship that could transform young men's lives.
