From a Car Trunk to a New England Empire: How a Catholic School Kid Built America's Preppy Lifestyle Brand
What happens when a working-class kid from Rhode Island with a passion for vintage blazers and handmade bracelets bets everything on the American Dream?
Meet Kiel James Patrick—a product of Catholic education, a self-made entrepreneur, and the man behind one of America's fastest-growing lifestyle brands. From selling rope bracelets out of his car trunk in his high school parking lot to operating a flagship store on Newport's historic Bowen's Wharf, Kiel has built something rare: a brand that's unmistakably American, proudly made in the USA, and rooted in the values he learned growing up Catholic in Rhode Island.
This isn't a story about trust funds or Ivy League connections. It's about hustle, faith, and a relentless commitment to creating something beautiful.
A Working-Class Kid with Big Dreams
Kiel James Patrick grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island—one of three children in a blue-collar family. His father was a police detective (now retired and running Del's Lemonade franchises); his mother is a schoolteacher. They weren't prep school people by pedigree, but they sent Kiel to Bishop Hendricken High School, the prestigious Catholic boys' prep school founded by the Brothers of the Holy Cross in 1959.
It was at Hendricken that Kiel's creative spirit took root. Father Marcel Taillon, the school's chaplain during Kiel's years there, remembers him as someone who was "stirring things up, pushing the boundaries in a fashionable way"—but always with respect. While other kids were focused on college applications, Kiel was collecting vintage clothing and selling resewn blazers and ties to classmates.
By the time he graduated, he wasn't just a student with a side hustle. He was an entrepreneur in the making.

The Bracelet That Started It All
After high school, Kiel started dating a girl named Sarah Vickers—also from Warwick, also someone who understood his vision. Together, they began crafting rope bracelets by hand in his backyard. What started as a creative outlet became a movement.
They sold bracelets out of his car trunk, then in college dorm rooms, then at the beach. The response was overwhelming. With Sarah's marketing instincts and Kiel's design eye, they realized this was bigger than a hobby.
So Kiel made the decision that would change everything: he dropped out of college.
In 2008, at just 19 years old, he founded Kiel James Patrick—a company named after himself because he believed that if he was going to build something, he'd stake his name on it.
"I found this girl, she's right out of the 1960s. She's beautiful," Kiel said of Sarah. The couple married in November 2015 at Henry's Christmas Tree Farm in Hope, Rhode Island—a location they'd visited every year together.
The Brand: Timeless New England, Made in America
Today, Kiel James Patrick is far more than bracelets. The company offers:
Signature Rope Bracelets — The product that started it all. Nautical-inspired bracelets handcrafted in their Pawtucket, Rhode Island factory, starting at $28.
Classic Apparel — Sweaters, flannels, quarter-zips, and dresses that capture the spirit of New England autumns, cozy ski lodges, and lakeside picnics. Their Alpine Moose Sweater ($148) has become a seasonal favorite.
Handcrafted Jewelry — Necklaces, earrings, and rings inspired by the sea and designed for everyday elegance, like the Golden Tide Pearl Knot Necklace ($68).
Home & Lifestyle — Blankets, mugs, umbrellas, and even dog accessories—because the KJP lifestyle extends to every corner of life.

Made in Rhode Island. Made in America.
Here's what sets Kiel James Patrick apart in an era of overseas manufacturing: 90% of their production stays local to Rhode Island.
Almost all of their jewelry is made at their own factory in Pawtucket. In a state where the jewelry industry has shrunk by nearly 90% over the past 35 years, Kiel and Sarah are adding jobs—not shipping them overseas.
"It feels really good to be adding jobs in an industry that is so important to the identity of our state," Kiel has said.
This commitment isn't just good business. It's a reflection of the values he learned growing up: work hard, take care of your community, and build something that lasts.

Why This Matters
Rhode Island's jewelry manufacturing industry has shrunk by nearly 90% in the last 35 years. While most brands chased cheaper overseas labor, Kiel James Patrick went the other direction -- keeping 90% of production local to Rhode Island and adding jobs in Pawtucket. This is a Catholic school kid from a blue-collar Warwick family who dropped out of college to make rope bracelets, and who now runs a nationally recognized lifestyle brand with his wife Sarah from a flagship store on Newport's Bowen's Wharf. The KJP story is proof that the values taught in Catholic education -- work hard, take care of your community, build something that lasts -- can compete at the highest level of American business.
