The Benedictine Monk Who Built the World's Largest Pro-Life Mission to 161 Countries
What happens when a Benedictine priest with a doctorate in family sociology sees the coming wave of abortion legalization—and decides to spend 40 years traveling the globe to stop it?
Meet Human Life International—the world's first and largest international pro-life apostolate, founded by Father Paul Marx, OSB, in 1972. From its headquarters in Front Royal, Virginia, HLI has conducted over 1,500 missions to 161 countries, training local leaders to defend life from conception to natural death.
Before most Americans understood that abortion was becoming a global movement, Father Marx was on airplanes, traveling to country after country, founding pro-life movements and training leaders. His vision built an organization that today operates on six continents in over 100 countries—all rooted in authentic Catholic teaching on the dignity of human life.
A Monk Becomes the "Apostle for Life"
Father Paul Marx was born in 1920 in St. Michael, Minnesota—the 15th of 17 children in a devout Catholic family. He was ordained a Benedictine priest in 1947 and earned his doctorate in Family Sociology from The Catholic University of America.
When abortion legalization began sweeping through Western nations in the 1960s, Father Marx saw something most Catholics missed: this wasn't a local phenomenon. It was a coordinated global movement backed by international organizations and massive funding.
His response was equally global.
With permission from his monastery, Father Marx began traveling the world—eventually visiting over 90 countries—to proclaim the "Culture of Life" and oppose the "Culture of Death." He founded local pro-life movements, trained local leaders, and connected isolated pro-life advocates into a worldwide network.
For his tireless efforts, Father Marx became known as the "Apostle for Life" and the "Patriarch of the Pro-Life Movement."
From Human Life Center to Human Life International
Father Marx's work began institutionally in 1972 when he founded the Human Life Center at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. The Center provided research, education, and resources for the emerging pro-life movement.
Two years later, recognizing that the threats to life were international in scope, he expanded the organization into Human Life International (HLI)—the world's first international pro-life apostolate.
In 1996, HLI moved its headquarters to Front Royal, Virginia, where it remains today—just down the road from Christendom College, in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.
When Father Marx retired in 1999 after 40 years of global pro-life work, he left behind an organization operating on every inhabited continent. He passed away in 2010, but his mission continues.
What HLI Does Today
Human Life International describes itself as an "educational apostolate devoted to empowering international leaders and the people they serve." In practice, this means:
Training Pro-Life Leaders HLI provides formation for priests, crisis pregnancy center staff, civic leaders, media professionals, and family counselors—anyone positioned to influence their community on life issues.
Organizing Local Movements Rather than imposing American solutions, HLI helps local leaders build pro-life movements appropriate to their cultures and contexts.
Educational Resources Books, pamphlets, videos, and training materials in multiple languages—resources that local leaders can use to educate their communities.
Crisis Pregnancy Support Working with pregnancy centers around the world to help mothers choose life and receive the support they need.
Defending Catholic Teaching HLI is unapologetically Catholic, defending not just life issues but the Church's full teaching on marriage, family, and human sexuality.
Why International Work Matters
Many Americans focus on pro-life work within the United States. HLI takes a different approach—because the threats to life are international.
The same organizations that promoted abortion legalization in America have done the same work in developing nations. International bodies pressure countries to legalize abortion as a condition of aid. Contraception and sterilization programs target the world's poorest populations.
HLI exists to provide a counter-witness—to ensure that pro-life voices are present in every country where life is threatened, and that local leaders have the training and resources they need to defend their communities.
By the numbers:
- 1,500+ missions conducted since 1972
- 161 countries reached
- 100+ countries with active work today
- 6 continents covered
- 50+ years of continuous ministry
Rooted in Catholic Teaching
HLI is not generically "pro-life"—it is explicitly Catholic.
The organization defends the full range of Catholic teaching on life, family, and human dignity, including:
- Opposition to abortion, euthanasia, and assisted suicide
- Support for natural family planning over contraception
- Defense of marriage as between one man and one woman
- Affirmation of human dignity from conception to natural death
- The Church's teaching on human sexuality
This commitment to Catholic teaching distinguishes HLI from secular pro-life organizations and ensures that its work is rooted in a coherent moral vision.
Why This Matters
If Human Life International did not exist, the pro-life movement in dozens of countries would simply not exist either. HLI did not just advocate -- it built the infrastructure of life defense on six continents, training the local leaders who are now the front line in their own nations. Father Marx saw what few others grasped in 1972: that the push to legalize abortion was a coordinated global campaign, and that the response had to be equally global. Fifty years later, the network he built continues to ensure that no country faces the culture of death alone.
